Preschool Fall Learning Activities

Fall presents us with so many natural opportunities to help our little ones learn new skills. Pumpkins, apples, colorful leaves, acorns, and other familiar seasonal objects can become simple tools for practicing early math, phonics, patterns, and observational skills.

While themed units and autumnal crafts can support fall learning, I think there is a difference between using a fall theme and actually making fall meaningful for learning.

Here’s a simple five-day fall learning week you can use in your homeschool lesson or preschool classroom.

Monday: A Little Fall Counting

Monday is an easy place to begin with counting. Gather a few apples or leaves and count them together with your little one, and then ask them which represents the group. This may seem like a small distinction, but it is an important one. Sometimes children can successfully recall numbers in order but may not understand that a number represents a quantity.

This is why I particularly like counting activities that ask children to connect numbers and groups of objects instead of simply reciting numbers. In that way, children form a strong foundation of understanding number meaning.

In this Fall Pre-k Activity Bundle, five pages are dedicated to helping children build this skill. Each page has familiar fall pictures and is focused on counting a group and matching it to the correct number.
